The Downtown library opened in 1989. A 2005 renovation included: a consolidated media room for all audio visual materials, refurbished restrooms, a new computer lab, expanded meeting room space, and a new conference room. Also, shelving for library materials increased and service desks were built and re-located. Behind the scenes, several offices were constructed, compact shelving was purchased for storage of materials and a better work space was provided for the Friends of the Library.
“The $750,000 renovation was accomplished with carefully stewarded tax funding and without an additional tax levy,” stated Library Board Facilities chair, Jerry Withered. “Grants from two local organizations, assisted in putting the finishing touches on our renovation,” he noted. A $75,000 grant from the Alfred N. and Dorothy M. McAllister Foundation assisted in the expansion of the meeting rooms. A $50,000 gift from the Friends of the Library was earmarked towards the new conference room.
